Grace … may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. 2 Corinthians 4:15
As we approach Thanksgiving and the start of the Christmas season, I want to focus on the most wonderful benefit we have to be thankful for: grace. Grace is unmerited favor, a spiritual blessing that refocuses our attention on the eternal rather than the temporal.
Grace is the basis of our salvation. And what is salvation? The forgiveness of sins. My sins are forgiven! Oh, how thankful I am for this truth! I no longer have to carry this heavy burden, as I once did. Guilt is no longer my constant companion because I have been reconciled to God.
Adopted into God’s Family
But what is reconciliation? This word means that although we were separated from God, we have been brought back into a relationship with Him. That, in and of itself, should cause thanksgiving to abound, but there’s more! Through this reconciliation, we have been adopted into God’s family; we have become His children.
Think of it this way. It’s one thing to be pardoned by a judge, but it would be a completely different matter for that same judge to then say, “I want to adopt you. I want you to become my child. I want to love you, provide for you, take care of you, and bring you into my family.” That’s what God has done for us, and He’s done it through grace.
As you sit down to celebrate with your families this week, may these truths produce in you a heart of thankfulness. And may they also lead you to reach out to those who have yet to discover the joy of being adopted into the family of God.
