Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6
We all know what it’s like to be physically hungry. Most of us have had the experience of feeling like we were “starving to death,” even though we weren’t. You know what I’m talking about.
We sometimes hear that a particular athlete is “hungry,” referring to their deep passion and intense commitment to victory. When the “fire” goes out of a champion, we say they’ve lost their hunger for victory.
Hungry for Righteousness
Well, that same type of thing can happen to us spiritually. We can lose our hunger, so to speak. How do we stay hungry for righteousness? It’s a matter of stoking the fires of our spiritual lives. It’s about going after God!
It’s not enough just to think about it, we’ve got to aggressively go for it. What does that look like? It looks like this: faithful meditation on God’s Word, cultivating a life of communion with God through prayer, being in community with God’s people, and living a life of service in the kingdom of Christ. It’s only by disciplining ourselves in these things that we’ll maintain our hunger for righteousness.
